Lily Tomlin has said, “If love is the answer, will you please reframe the question?” Finding the love of your life can be exhausting and heartbreaking. Plus, wherever we look and listen, someone is telling us what love is and how to find it. Greg was formerly the Vicar for Christ Church Plano and has now relocated to Church of the Incarnation! Helen Keller wrote, “The world is full of suffering, it is also full of overcoming it.“ It takes only a moment to look around us and know that suffering exists in the world. Probably all of us have been touched by it--either in the mundane or in the heart-wrenching. Either way, one cannot escape it’s effect. So how do we cope with suffering? How do we help others? Theology was once described as the investigation of God and everything else in so far as it relates to God. So how do we relate the current economic mess to God? Is it divine judgment on us? Is it a moment of truth? Or should we rethink what theology itself is? Acts 2 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs-we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?" 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine."

The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him."

THE READING: 33 And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. 34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” And they divided His garments and cast lots. 35 And the people stood looking on. But even the rulers with them sneered, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.” 36 The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him sour wine, 37 and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.” 38 And an inscription also was written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. 39 Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, “If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.” 40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” 43 And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” Jesus Dies on the Cross

Jesus Celebrates the Passover with His DisciplesNow on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they killed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?” Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper
THE READING: Colossians 3:1-11 What does it mean to "take up your cross" and follow Christ? What does that look like in real life? Father Greg explores these questions in part 1 (Sunday Morning). In part 2 (evening service) Greg continues with practical, nuts-and-bolts ways to take up our cross. Jesus Predicts His Death and ResurrectionMark 8:31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke this word openly. Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. 33 But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.” Take Up the Cross and Follow Him 34 When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 35 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? 37 Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
THE READING: Deuteronomy 4:25-31 11 And He said, "A man had two sons. 12 "The younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me (A)the share of the estate that falls to me ' So he divided his (B)wealth between them. 13 "And not many days later, the younger son gathered everything together and went on a journey into a distant country, and there he squandered his estate with loose living. 14 "Now when he had spent everything, a severe famine occurred in that country, and he began to be impoverished. 15 "So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16 "And he would have gladly filled his stomach with the pods that the swine were eating, and no one was giving anything to him. 17 "But when he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have more than enough bread, but I am dying here with hunger! 18 'I will get up and go to my father, and will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight; 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me as one of your hired men."' 20 "So he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and (C)embraced him and kissed him. 21 "And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' 22 "But the father said to his slaves, 'Quickly bring out (D)the best robe and put it on him, and (E)put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet; 23 and bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; 24 for this son of mine was (F)dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.' And they began to celebrate. 25 "Now his older son was in the field, and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 "And he summoned one of the servants and began inquiring what these things could be. 27 "And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has received him back safe and sound.' 28 "But he became angry and was not willing to go in; and his father came out and began pleading with him. 29 "But he answered and said to his father, 'Look! For so many years I have been serving you and I have never neglected a command of yours; and yet you have never given me a young goat, so that I might celebrate with my friends; 30 but when this son of yours came, who has devoured your (G)wealth with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him.' 31 "And he said to him, 'Son, you have always been with me, and all that is mine is yours. 32 'But we had to celebrate and rejoice, for this brother of yours was (H)dead and has begun to live, and was lost and has been found.'"

THE READING: Psalm 27 Father Oliver speaks on the credibility of Jesus the Christ -- that on the mountain of transfiguration, the very voice of God re-iterated to those with him that the Son of God was there and they he was to be listened to. That even the disciples bore need of understanding the truth of his Godhead. That even though he lived, ate, and worked with them, he was not to be taken for granted. That the Son of God was to be listened to and obeyed. 2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. 3 His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. 4 And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus. 5 Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." 6 (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.) 7 Then a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud: "This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!" 8 Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus. 9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
THE READING: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 This week Father Bob speaks about our fight to stay on target as a Christian trying to live as God intends; amidst a world full of distractions and perils that can lead us astray. Paul speaks of self-discipline and an ordered way of living to help balance the distractions...how can we do this? Bob speaks about what an outcast was and how it must have affected lepers as Jesus healed them -- he touched them when no one ever had. Once we are healed, we still have a fight on our hands living as God intends. We don't EARN our salvation, grace covers that. However we are called to still make the effort to live well--this is why Paul speaks of running a race and self-discipline.
THE READING: 1 Corinthians 8:-1b-13 What does in mean to be a good steward of what God has given you? Do we have a responsibility to share with the Church from that which God has blessed us? Is it arbitrary or is there really a history and reason there? Bishop Burton discusses the topic of stewardship and how it plays a role in our lives.
THE READING: Psalms 111 Is it possible to be to familiar with Jesus? Can this be manifested by a lack of awe and devotion to him? Father Greg brings a refreshed perspective on who Jesus really was to the people of his day. How he was different from the other leaders. How he moved with purpose. How he loved them. And how they responded.

June 2, 2008| Theology Live: Ale & The Almighty 1: "Religion & Politics" A talk by Dr. Billy Abraham
"Many Americans are perplexed (some are furious) about the role of religion in the public square. There are deep dilemmas at the heart of the debate. If religion enters the public square, then it runs the danger of being a source of division and coercion. If it stays out of the public square, then religion runs the risk of being privatized and thus ceases to be itself. If religion goes public, then the separation of church and state is undermined. If it does not go public, the social capital of public life is diminished. Can we resolve these dilemmas? And what should we do?" Born in Northern Ireland in 1947, Abraham is currently a Distinguished University Teacher at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University. Educated at Portora Royal School, Enniskillen and Queen’s University, Belfast, Abraham went on to receive a Master of Divinity Degree from Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky and a doctorate in Philosophy of Religion from the University of Oxford, England. He has served as a Methodist minister in Ireland and held the post of Associate Professor of Theology and Philosophy at Seattle Pacific University, Seattle, Washington and the McCreless Professor of Evangelism and Professor of Philosophy of Religion at Perkins School of Theology. In 1995 he was appointed to the Albert Cook Outler Professor of Theology and Wesley Studies at Perkins, working as a philosophical and systematic theologian in the Wesleyan tradition. Professor Abraham has authored numerous articles and books in philosophy, theology, and evangelism. This is the last installment of a sermon series where we’ve been looking at how to deal with some of the different emotions we experience at different times and try to see how the Christian faith may speak to these emotions. Anger is an emotion we all face from time to time, that impacts decision making, that can cloud our judgment, and that Christians have particularly had a difficult time addressing! What a dangerous emotion to talk about in Church on Sunday morning?! After all, “Anger” is one letter away from “Danger!” Anger is a tough one because it takes on so many faces and varying degrees of presence. From the slightest hint of what might be a dissatisfaction or frustration all the way through absolute rage or fury, we all experience it for different reasons throughout our lives, our days, and it can really affect us, so it is important to take a look at this emotion as Christians.
