Something worth sharingJune22, 2009| Theology Live '09 IV: "Relationships" by the Rev'd. Greg MethvinBob Johnston

Lily Tomlin has said, “If love is the answer, will you please reframe the question?” Finding the love of your life can be exhausting and heartbreaking. Plus, wherever we look and listen, someone is telling us what love is and how to find it.

So where do you go for advice on love? Who do you trust to provide sound wisdom on one of the most important decisions of your life? The Bible tells us that you won’t find a better guide to lasting love than God.

If you think about it, God is much more than the resident expert on religion and ethics, but that is often the only role we offer God. If we are open to the idea that God exists at all, then we can at least agree that God has observed the human heart and relationships for thousands of years. For that reason alone, we will want to listen to what God has to say about love and relationships. In this
session, Greg will unpack how God helps us find, grow and repair lasting love for a lifetime.

Greg was formerly the Vicar for Christ Church Plano and has now relocated to Church of the Incarnation! He was ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church in 2004 after 14 years as a Baptist minister. He holds the Bachelor of Arts degree from Louisiana College and the Master of Divinity with a concentration in biblical languages from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

Something worth sharingJune 15, 2009| Theology Live '09 III: "Suffering" by the Rev'd. Dr. Steve DanzeyBob Johnston

Helen Keller wrote, “The world is full of suffering, it is also full of overcoming it.“ It takes only a moment to look around us and know that suffering exists in the world. Probably all of us have been touched by it--either in the mundane or in the heart-wrenching. Either way, one cannot escape it’s effect. So how do we cope with suffering? How do we help others?

Dr. Steve Danzey has been in the Ministry for many years and is now
an Assisting Priest with Church of the Redeemer. He is a graduate of Samford University with degrees in History and Religion, and has both a Masters of Divinity and a Ph. D. in Theology from Southwestern
Theological Seminary.

Something worth sharingJune 8, 2009| Theology Live '09 II: "Most Controversial Topic" by the Rev'd. Bob JohnstonBob Johnston

For the last six years, one topic has been requested by attendees of THEOLOGY LIVE, ALE & THE
ALMIGHTY more than any other. It is not only the most requested, but also the most controversial. Father Johnston will address this topic with a thought-provoking survey of the issue from various
perspectives within the Christian community.

The Rev. Bob Johnston is priest-in-charge of the Uptown ministry at Church of the Incarnation where he has been on staff since 2004. As a bi-vocational priest, he also works as a patent attorney in downtown
Dallas. He has a mechanical engineering degree from Baylor University and graduate degrees in law, business, and theology from Southern Methodist University. He is married to Robin and has twin sons. Father Bob’s normal role with Theology Live, in years past, has been that of host. But his experience, passion, and love for people give him a unique
perspective for this special topic.

Something worth sharingJune 1, 2009| Theology Live '09 I: "The Economy" by Dr. Billy AbrahamBob Johnston

Theology was once described as the investigation of God and everything else in so far as it relates to God. So how do we relate the current economic mess to God? Is it divine judgment on us? Is it a moment of truth? Or should we rethink what theology itself is?

Born in Northern Ireland in 1947, Abraham is currently a Distinguished University Teacher at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University. Educated at Portora Royal School, Enniskillen and Queen’s University, Belfast, Abraham went on to receive a Master of Divinity Degree from Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky and a doctorate in Philosophy of Religion from the University of Oxford, England.

He has served as a Methodist minister in Ireland and held the post of Associate Professor of Theology and Philosophy at Seattle Pacific University, and the McCreless Professor of Evangelism and Professor of Philosophy of Religion at Perkins School of Theology. Professor Abraham has authored numerous articles and books in philosophy, theology, and evangelism. In 1991 he wrote a major review article on “The State of Christian Theology in North America” for the Encyclopedia Britannica’s Great Ideas Today. Repelled by ChristiansMay 31, 2009| "Day of Pentecost" A Sermon by Dorothy BuddBob Johnston

Acts 2
1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs-we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?" 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine."

Peter Addresses the Crowd
14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose...

A New WorldApril 12, 2009| "A New World " A Sermon by Father BobBob Johnston

THE READING: Acts 10:34-43
GOSPEL:
Mark 16:1-8

Mark 16
He Is Risen
1 Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him. 2 Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. 3 And they said among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?” 4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away—for it was very large. 5 And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed.
6 But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. 7 But go, tell His disciples—and Peter—that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you.”
8 So they went out quickly and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

The CrucifixionApril 5, 2009| "The Crucifixion " A Sermon by Father Greg MethvinGreg Methvin

THE READING:
GOSPEL:
Luke 23:33-49

33 And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. 34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” And they divided His garments and cast lots. 35 And the people stood looking on. But even the rulers with them sneered, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.” 36 The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him sour wine, 37 and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.” 38 And an inscription also was written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew:

THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

39 Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, “If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.” 40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” 43 And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”

Jesus Dies on the Cross
44 Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45 Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two. 46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’”Having said this, He breathed His last. 47 So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous Man!” 48 And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned. 49 But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.

Innoncence CondemnedMarch 29, 2009| "Innocence Condemned" A Sermon by Deacon Dorothy BuddDeacon Dorothy Budd

THE READING:
GOSPEL: Mark 14:53 - 15:15

Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin

53 And they led Jesus away to the high priest; and with him were assembled all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes. 54 But Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he sat with the servants and warmed himself at the fire.
55 Now the chief priests and all the council sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. 56 For many bore false witness against Him, but their testimonies did not agree. 57 Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying, 58 “We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.’” 59 But not even then did their testimony agree. 60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” 61 But He kept silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” 62 Jesus said, “I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? 64 You have heard the blasphemy! What do you think?” And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death. 65 Then some began to spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, and to say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers struck Him with the palms of their hands.

Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps
66 Now as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came. 67 And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with Jesus of Nazareth.” 68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are saying.” And he went out on the porch, and a rooster crowed. 69 And the servant girl saw him again, and began to say to those who stood by, “This is one of them.” 70 But he denied it again. And a little later those who stood by said to Peter again, “Surely you are one of them; for you are a Galilean, and your speech shows it.” 71 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this Man of whom you speak!” 72 A second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And when he thought about it, he wept.

Mark 15
Jesus Faces Pilate
1 Immediately, in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they bound Jesus, led Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate. 2 Then Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
He answered and said to him, “It is as you say.” 3 And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He answered nothing. 4 Then Pilate asked Him again, saying, “Do You answer nothing? See how many things they testify against You!” 5 But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled. Taking the Place of Barabbas

6 Now at the feast he was accustomed to releasing one prisoner to them, whomever they requested. 7 And there was one named Barabbas, who was chained with his fellow rebels; they had committed murder in the rebellion. 8 Then the multitude, crying aloud, began to ask him to do just as he had always done for them. 9 But Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather release Barabbas to them. 12 Pilate answered and said to them again, “What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?” 13 So they cried out again, “Crucify Him!” 14 Then Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more, “Crucify Him!” 15 So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified.

Agony in the GardenMarch 22, 2009| "Agony in the Garden " A Sermon by Carrie BorenCarrie Boren

THE READING: I Peter 1:3-9
GOSPEL: Mark 14:32-42

Carrie continues the "Way of the Cross" series with part 2: "Agony in the Garden", discussing the betrayal of Jesus by Judas.

The Prayer in the Garden

32 Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 And He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed. 34 Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch.”
35 He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. 36 And He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.”
37 Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour? 38 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
39 Again He went away and prayed, and spoke the same words. 40 And when He returned, He found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him.
41 Then He came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”

The Last SupperMarch 15, 2009| "The Last Supper " A Sermon by Fr. Bob JohnstonBob Johnston

THE READING: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
GOSPEL: Mark 14:12-25

Bob begins an extended series following the Passion week of Christ, starting with the last supper.

Jesus Celebrates the Passover with His Disciples

Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they killed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?”
13 And He sent out two of His disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him. 14 Wherever he goes in, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 15 Then he will show you a large upper room, furnished and prepared; there make ready for us.”16 So His disciples went out, and came into the city, and found it just as He had said to them; and they prepared the Passover.17 In the evening He came with the twelve. 18 Now as they sat and ate, Jesus said, “Assuredly, I say to you, one of you who eats with Me will betray Me.”19 And they began to be sorrowful, and to say to Him one by one, “Is it I?” And another said,Is it I?”20 He answered and said to them, “It is one of the twelve, who dips with Me in the dish. 21 The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had never been born.”

Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper

22 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”
23 Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them, “This is My blood of the new[c] covenant, which is shed for many. 25 Assuredly, I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.

Dying to ChangeMarch 9, 2009| "Dying to change " A Sermon by Fr. Greg MethvinGreg Methvin

THE READING: Colossians 3:1-11
GOSPEL: Mark 8:31-38

What does it mean to "take up your cross" and follow Christ? What does that look like in real life? Father Greg explores these questions in part 1 (Sunday Morning). In part 2 (evening service) Greg continues with practical, nuts-and-bolts ways to take up our cross.

Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection

Mark 8:31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke this word openly. Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. 33 But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”

Take Up the Cross and Follow Him

34 When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 35 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? 37 Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

Life in the Pig PenMarch 1, 2009| "Life in the Pig Pen " A Sermon by Fr. Matthew OlverMatthew Olver

THE READING: Deuteronomy 4:25-31
GOSPEL: Luke 15:11-32

11 And He said, "A man had two sons. 12 "The younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me (A)the share of the estate that falls to me ' So he divided his (B)wealth between them. 13 "And not many days later, the younger son gathered everything together and went on a journey into a distant country, and there he squandered his estate with loose living. 14 "Now when he had spent everything, a severe famine occurred in that country, and he began to be impoverished. 15 "So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16 "And he would have gladly filled his stomach with the pods that the swine were eating, and no one was giving anything to him.

17 "But when he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have more than enough bread, but I am dying here with hunger! 18 'I will get up and go to my father, and will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight; 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me as one of your hired men."' 20 "So he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and (C)embraced him and kissed him. 21 "And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' 22 "But the father said to his slaves, 'Quickly bring out (D)the best robe and put it on him, and (E)put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet; 23 and bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; 24 for this son of mine was (F)dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.' And they began to celebrate.

25 "Now his older son was in the field, and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 "And he summoned one of the servants and began inquiring what these things could be. 27 "And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has received him back safe and sound.' 28 "But he became angry and was not willing to go in; and his father came out and began pleading with him. 29 "But he answered and said to his father, 'Look! For so many years I have been serving you and I have never neglected a command of yours; and yet you have never given me a young goat, so that I might celebrate with my friends; 30 but when this son of yours came, who has devoured your (G)wealth with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him.' 31 "And he said to him, 'Son, you have always been with me, and all that is mine is yours. 32 'But we had to celebrate and rejoice, for this brother of yours was (H)dead and has begun to live, and was lost and has been found.'"

LectionaryFebruary 22, 2009| "This is My Son, Listen to Him!" A Sermon by Father OliverOliver Butler

THE READING: Psalm 27
GOSPEL: Mark 9:2-9

Father Oliver speaks on the credibility of Jesus the Christ -- that on the mountain of transfiguration, the very voice of God re-iterated to those with him that the Son of God was there and they he was to be listened to. That even the disciples bore need of understanding the truth of his Godhead. That even though he lived, ate, and worked with them, he was not to be taken for granted. That the Son of God was to be listened to and obeyed.

2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. 3 His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. 4 And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus. 5 Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." 6 (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.) 7 Then a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud: "This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!" 8 Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus. 9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

Fight of your LifeFebruary 15, 2009| "The Fight of Your Life" A Sermon by Father BobBishop Burton

THE READING: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27
GOSPEL:
Mark 1:40-45

This week Father Bob speaks about our fight to stay on target as a Christian trying to live as God intends; amidst a world full of distractions and perils that can lead us astray. Paul speaks of self-discipline and an ordered way of living to help balance the distractions...how can we do this? Bob speaks about what an outcast was and how it must have affected lepers as Jesus healed them -- he touched them when no one ever had. Once we are healed, we still have a fight on our hands living as God intends. We don't EARN our salvation, grace covers that. However we are called to still make the effort to live well--this is why Paul speaks of running a race and self-discipline.

September 14, 2008| "70x7" A Study of the true nature of forgiveness. by Father Oliver Butler Oliver Butler

Lectionary SermonWe are talking today about forgiveness. We all know about forgiveness because in different forms we experience it all the time in varying capacities: we forgive people in our lives for little things, big things. We’ve been forgiven for things we’ve done to others. The Gospel reading today paints a very particular picture about forgiveness. Peter thinks he is being generous by asking Jesus if he should forgive someone 7 times. Think about that. If someone went out of their way to hurt you, it would be tough to forgive them even 2 or 3 times. So I see Peter’s point – he is trying to be a good and forgiving person. 7 times is a lot. And to that Jesus responds by saying something like, “try 7 times 70 times.” In other words, every time! Wow. What? Really?

August 31, 2008| "A Vision for Incarnation" by Bishop BurtonBishop Burton

Lectionary SermonThe inaugural sermon at Uptown Church by Bishop Anthony Burton. "Paul's charge to the Romans is not to be overcome with evil, but to overcome evil with good"--don't get distracted and diverted from the cause before us! We are reminded to stay focused and:

          1. Remember the big picture; for we all have a duty in it!
          2. Remember that "recalculating our path" and renewal go hand in hand. Life continually causes us to recalculate.
          3. Remember to think big and dream big--our God is big enough!

June 23, 2008| Theology Live: Ale & The Almighty 4: "Suffering" A talk by Father Greg MethvinBob Johnston

Something worth sharing"Eugene Peterson writes that suffering is pain plus…the painful incident followed by fears, doubts, and deep wounds. Our experiences of suffering can crack our faith and crush our hopes. But can our faith also help face our hurts and point a way through the pain? Join Greg Methvin as we take on these questions and search for practical wisdom that will help us deal with our sufferings and deepen our faith in God."

Greg is the Vicar for Christ Church Plano and directs the day-to-day operations of the ministries of Christ Church. He was ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church in 2004 after 14 years as a Baptist minister. He holds the Bachelor of Arts degree from Louisiana College and the Master of Divinity with a concentration in biblical languages from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

Unfortunately it touches our lives in some way. I would like to address the subject of hypocrisy itself, offering thoughts about coming to terms with hypocrisy seen in the church, and address hypocrisy as an impediment to spiritual development."

The Rev. Bob Johnston is priest-in-charge of the Uptown ministry at Church of the Incarnation where he has been on staff since 2004. As a bi-vocational priest, he also works as a patent attorney in downtown Dallas. He has a mechanical engineering degree from Baylor University and graduate degrees in law, business, and theology from Southern Methodist University. He is married to Robin and has twin sons. While he has passionately served in hosting Theology Live over the years, he is excited to be among this year's speakers!

June 9, 2008| Theology Live: Ale & The Almighty 2: "Tainted Love" A talk by Dr. Davey NaugleBob Johnston

Something worth sharing"Everything seems broken, including our hearts. In our ongoing quest to find felicity, we attach our loves in tainted ways to things we hope will make us happy, only to be disappointed, and even more miserable, time and time again. What can deliver us from this agony and insanity? Our loves and lives need to be transformed, and only the good news of Christ can help us."

Dr. David K. Naugle is chair and professor of philosophy at Dallas Baptist University where he has worked for seventeen years in both administrative and academic capacities. He earned a Ph.D. in systematic theology, and a Ph.D. in humanities with concentrations in philosophy and English literature.

He is also the director of the Paideia College Society, an academic organization now internally funded by DBU. Overall, the PCS seeks to deepen the undergraduate students educational experience through a vision of Christian humanism and classical liberal education in this context.

Dr. Naugle serves as a “Fellow” for the Wilberforce Forum, the Christian worldview think tank sponsored by Prison Fellowship near Washington, D. C., and is also on the advisory board of the International Institute of Christian Studies. He is also the author of Worldview: The History of a Concept which was selected by Christianity Today magazine as the 2003 book of the year in the theology and ethics category.

June 2, 2008| Theology Live: Ale & The Almighty 1: "Religion & Politics" A talk by Dr. Billy AbrahamBob Johnston

Something worth sharing

"Many Americans are perplexed (some are furious) about the role of religion in the public square. There are deep dilemmas at the heart of the debate. If religion enters the public square, then it runs the danger of being a source of division and coercion. If it stays out of the public square, then religion runs the risk of being privatized and thus ceases to be itself. If religion goes public, then the separation of church and state is undermined. If it does not go public, the social capital of public life is diminished. Can we resolve these dilemmas? And what should we do?"

He has served as a Methodist minister in Ireland and held the post of Associate Professor of Theology and Philosophy at Seattle Pacific University, Seattle, Washington and the McCreless Professor of Evangelism and Professor of Philosophy of Religion at Perkins School of Theology. In 1995 he was appointed to the Albert Cook Outler Professor of Theology and Wesley Studies at Perkins, working as a philosophical and systematic theologian in the Wesleyan tradition.

Professor Abraham has authored numerous articles and books in philosophy, theology, and evangelism. In 1991 he wrote a major review article on “The State of Christian Theology in North America” for the Encyclopedia Britannica’s Great Ideas Today. His books include: The Divine Inspiration of Holy Scripture, Divine Revelation and the Limits of Historical Criticism, The Coming Great Revival: Recovering the Full Evangelical Tradition, An Introduction to the Philosophy of Religion, and The Logic of Evangelism; The Logic of Renewal; John Wesley for Armchair Theologians; Crossing the Threshold of Divine Revelation.

April 27, 2008| "Tied In Knots: ANGER" Part 4/4 in a sermon series by Father Oliver ButlerOliver Butler

"Tied In Knots" Sermon SeriesAnger is real, and throughout history and everyday right now, this sometimes unbridled emotion has driven people to hurt, destroy, manipulate, and kill other people. We see too clearly why it is important to control our anger everyday in the news, because uncontrolled anger, that leads to wrath and violence is what is destructive. Anger suppression, or not dealing our own feelings of anger, can lead to different types of damage – of others, of course, but also of the self. We can’t just ignore our feelings, or put a different label on it and expect it to vanish. But anger can also be what drives us to right wrongs, fight injustices, and stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.

This is the last installment of a sermon series where we’ve been looking at how to deal with some of the different emotions we experience at different times and try to see how the Christian faith may speak to these emotions. Anger is an emotion we all face from time to time, that impacts decision making, that can cloud our judgment, and that Christians have particularly had a difficult time addressing! What a dangerous emotion to talk about in Church on Sunday morning?! After all, “Anger” is one letter away from “Danger!” Anger is a tough one because it takes on so many faces and varying degrees of presence. From the slightest hint of what might be a dissatisfaction or frustration all the way through absolute rage or fury, we all experience it for different reasons throughout our lives, our days, and it can really affect us, so it is important to take a look at this emotion as Christians.
