Special thanks to our 2009 sponsors:
SESSION V with Apollo 16 Astronaut Charlie Duke will be at JUNE 29 SPECIAL EVENT: "WALKIN' ON THE MOON"
Each year Uptown Church, a ministry of Church of the Incarnation, sponsors an event at the Ginger Man Pub. Hot theological topics like “Religion & Politics” are presented by guest speakers in the comfort of the beer gardens. The evening begins with a short discourse by the speaker on the scheduled topic. After a short break a round of Q&A takes place ending with a few short remarks, and raffles for door prizes provided by the Ginger Man. Afterwards many stay to further discuss / debate the topic(s) at hand. Monday nights in June, from 7pm‐9pm | Ginger Man Pub, 2718 Boll Street Uptown near the Quadrangle The 2009 Lineup: June 1
RECAP: We had a capacity crowd last night -- you can check out the photos on flickr via the link above, and listen to the podcast as well. Just a reminder that the McKinney Ave. trolley is an option. Also starting next week we're wiring speakers in to the upstairs inside area of the Ginger Man so the overflow of people will have seats as well and still be able to hear! Billy is a perennial favorite of everybody it seems and last night was no different! He regailed us with many anecdotes and thoughts that, distilled down, was this: Some things the government should and is good at while others things they are not (without a radical change in the governmental structure and laws); and that God has given us the tools to make many decisions and act -- that we can waste time looking for a revelation for everything we contemplate in live. Here are a few quotes that got the crowd going: "Obama is the High Priest of our civil religion..." "America is a theological experiment where you believe in God and then become vague on who God is..." "I like the Royal Family--but lock them up until you need them..." "Make all you can (honestly), save all you can, and give away all you can." BILLY'S INTRO: Theology was once described as the investigation of God and everything else in so far as it relates to God. So how do we relate the current economic mess to God? Is it divine judgment on us? Is it a moment of truth? Or should we rethink what theology itself is? ABOUT BILLY: Born in Northern Ireland in 1947, Abraham is currently a Distinguished University Teacher at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University. Educated at Portora Royal School, Enniskillen and Queen’s University, Belfast, Abraham went on to receive a Master of Divinity Degree from Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky and a doctorate in Philosophy of Religion from the University of Oxford, England. He has served as a Methodist minister in Ireland and held the post of Associate Professor of Theology and Philosophy at Seattle Pacific University, and the McCreless Professor of Evangelism and Professor of Philosophy of Religion at Perkins School of Theology. Professor Abraham has authored numerous articles and books in philosophy, theology, and evangelism. In 1991 he wrote a major review article on “The State of Christian Theology in North America” for the Encyclopedia Britannica’s Great Ideas Today.
BOB'S INTRO:For the last six years, one topic has been requested by attendees of THEOLOGY LIVE, ALE & THE ALMIGHTY more than any other. It is not only the most requested, but also one of the most controversial. Father Johnston will address the topic of homosexuality and the Church with a thought- provoking survey of the issue from several angles, simply identifying the various points of view represented in the world of Christendom. ABOUT BOB: The Rev. Bob Johnston is priest-in-charge of the Uptown ministry at Church of the Incarnation where he has been on staff since 2004. As a bi-vocational priest, he also works as a patent attorney in downtown
Dallas. He has a mechanical engineering degree from Baylor University and graduate degrees in law, business, and theology from Southern Methodist University. He is married to Robin and has twin sons. Father Bob’s normal role with Theology Live, in years past, has been that of host. But his experience, passion, and love for people give him a unique
STEVE'S INTRO:Helen Keller wrote, “The world is full of suffering, it is also full of overcoming it.“ It takes only a moment to look around us and know that suffering exists in the world. Probably all of us have been touched by it--either in the mundane or in the heart-wrenching. Either way, one cannot escape it’s effect. So how do we cope with suffering? How do we help others? ABOUT STEVE: Dr. Steve Danzey has been in the Ministry for many years and is now working with Church of the Redeemer. He is a graduate of Samford University with degrees in History and Religion, and has both a Masters of Divinity and also Ph. D. in Theology from Southwestern Theological Seminary.
GREG'S INTRO:Lily Tomlin has said, “If love is the answer, will you please reframe the question?” Finding the love of your life can be exhausting and heartbreaking. Plus, wherever we look and listen, someone is telling us what love is and how to find it. ABOUT GREG: Greg was formerly the Vicar for Christ Church Plano and has now relocated to Church of the Incarnation! He was ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church in 2004 after 14 years as a Baptist minister. He holds the Bachelor of Arts degree from Louisiana College and the Master of Divinity with a concentration in biblical languages from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
